Large Skipper, Go Be Wild, Barbara Copperthwaite

Skipper butterfly

There are a number of different Skippers in the UK. Pictured left is the Large Skipper (and below, where the underwing pattern can clearly be seen) which was in Highbury Park, Birmingham. It is possible to tell it is a male by the black stripe of a scent line across its wings.

Large Skippers are found throughout the country (apart from Scotland) between the months of May and September. and particularly love long grasses, ideally with woodland nearby. When the weather is good they seem to move constantly, their orange wings looking like rays of sunshine dancing as their hover and flit.
