Speckled Wood

 

There are variations in colour with the Speckled Wood, going from the warmer brown tones and orange spots to a slightly dingier version that can be darker and its spots are more of a creamy yellow.

This butterfly like to be on the edges of woods, flitting amongst the dappled sunlight of clearings and readily resting on the leaves of shrubs.

The caterpillars feed on (which are matt green and have short hairs) feed on various grasses, while the adult butterfly enjoys over-ripe berries, nectar, tree sap...
